When I open the VM version sage-7.4.ova with VirtualBox Graphical User Interface Version 5.1.16 r113841 (Qt5.6.2), this systematically crashes my PC W10 64.

Exactly what did you download? This forum is for the Sage software - there is a sage-7.4.ova but not wise-7.4.ova, unless you are making a pun, maybe? It's possible that your VirtualBox is having problems but this is unfortunate that it crashes the PC, not just the virtual machine!

It seems that I am the only one to encounter problems using (now Sage7.6.ova with Virtualbox) under OS W10? Would there be other people in my case? If not then it would mean that I have to look in my W10 configuration.

it is ok with VMware 12 workstation Sage7.6 W10. so it seems the problem comes from Oracle Virtualbox under W10 OS !

But apart from that. Why does this very simple code produce this Python error ?. ( see the last image at the end of the post on microsoft community)

Edited 2017/04/29 :Solved !!

Oops, Oops,Oops !!!I'm ashamed of not thinking about it earlier! It was simply enough to increase the size of the Ram for the VM !. I set it to 2 Giga byte, and I also pass the number of processor to 2. and now it is OK for W10 Virtualbox and sageMath7.6.ova !

do not forget also to enable copy paste: Virtualbox->settings-> general tab ->advanced tab -> Shared clipboard -> bidir Drag'ndrop -> bidir

See here at the end of the post on Microsoft Forum

Yes, we probably usually recommend VMWare.

I precise that people have to register to VMware if one wants to download the free version 12.5 (VMware-player-12.5.5 for the moment). beside that non-English people would encounter pb when they want to copy paste code from external of the VMware VM , when changing the keyboard with the method below:

method 3 for french (open teminal ) sudo nano /etc/sysconfig/keyboard

KEYTABLE="fr-latin1"
MODEL="pc105+inet"
LAYOUT="fr"

char are ok when input with keyboard but

then edit->VMwaremenu -> paste in sage.7.6 cells produces weird char ! this is not the case when one is in English copy paste is ok, (but is working in one way only, in contrary to Sage.7.6.ova used in Oracle Virtualbox (on W7 ! ) which has no problem of copy paste both ways (PC host <-> sage VM)

After using both VMware and Virtualbox, I will recommend rather Virtualbox.

You should add as a second argument to solve the variable(s) to solve for, which is x in your case:

sage: solve(x^2+3*x+2==0, x)
[x == -2, x == -1]

Type solve? for more details and examples.
