If you are using the sagenb Sage notebook, you can change the environment variable DOT_SAGE or even DOT_SAGENB; see this question.
The download functionality is completely separate from the storage. Notebooks are numbered, and live in a directory like .sage/sage_notebook.sagenb/home/admin/ (depending on your DOT_SAGE or DOT_SAGENB), listed by the number. Downloads will just go to whatever download directory your system prescribes, I guess.
Thanks. I tried setting DOT_SAGENB to a directory and restarted sage. In the sage notebook interface I named my notebook "raspberry" and saved it. When I look in that directory I see a new directory called sage_notebook.sagenb, but there is no file called "raspberry" anywhere in it or its subdirectories. If I do a download of the notebook and save to a file called "raspberry", I do see a new file called "raspberry.sws" but it is still in the ~/Downloads directory.
When notebooks are saved are they in a separate file with the same name as the notebook name? I searched for a file like that in numerous places and have never found one. Even with downloads I can't seem to get them to go where I want.
I suppose you are using the Sage Notebook and not the Jupyter notebook, and you are downloading a Sage Notebook worksheeet as a .sws file.
This downloads the file to the default place where all your downloads go. You can set a preference in your browser for where to download stuff by default. You can also set a preference to ask you each time.
