Green bar in notebook

It happens somewhat often, with different programs, that I click shift-enter to run a long calculation in Sage, and at some point later notice that the green bar is gone, but now that skinny red bar is there, as if it had never been run. And, if I try to run something else, even something that takes a millisecond, it sits there with the green bar. My thought is that the original long calculation is still running. Do you think my estimation is correct? If so, is this a known issue? Is there a way to fix it?

That's possible. Can you give an example of such a computation for sagenb.org? We can look at the network traffic and try to diagnose it.

Are you using one of the public servers such as http://sagenb.org? If so, you get the red bar because the server resets worksheets after 10 minutes of CPU time has elapsed. I configured it this way because there are tens of thousands of accounts, everything runs on a single computer (right now), and I wanted to control usage. Now that scalability has been improving a lot (due to work of Mike Hansen and others), I'll likely increase this time substantially.

I just upped the timeout from 10 minutes to 1 hour, and am restarting all the public servers now.

@WilliamStein Actually, no it's not a public server. And, there is no timeout on this server. But, thanks for the idea.
