It would seem you are using the SageMath macOS app.
That app provides a lightweight version of Sage which has
all the standard functionality but does not provide enough
to extend Sage using sage -i.
The solution for you would be to install Sage
- from the macOS binaries (take the .tar.bz2 file from the Sage download site)
- or by building it from source, see the readme and the installation manual
