I downloaded the binary for 10.04 and installed it on Ubuntu 11.x -- it seems to be working without trouble. (I did have to install an extra library with "apt-get install". I don't remember the name of the library, but it was obvious from the error messages printed when I tried to start Sage).

On my netbook running Ubuntu, binary Sage installs are definitely preferred over compiling from source.

Yep, compiling from source is generally the preferred way to install Sage.
