Sage warned me in a red banner (as best I can remember) that someone is viewing the notebook that is was working on.

Was I being given a warning? If so what should I do? Wait until my collaborator has left the notebook.

What happens if we both try to make changes at the same?

We are working online. I get taken to sageb.

While collaboration is good in Sage, it's not quite as good as Google Docs. I would recommend that you not actually both edit at the same time, as something is likely to get corrupted. Viewing is okay; if you refresh the browser page, you should see the "current" view.

If I recall correctly from some tests a year or two ago.

IIRC, if both of you are editing the same worksheet, it will try to sync the worksheets. The sync algorithm is rather naive (if we're out of date, refresh the entire page, but I think try to keep the cell you were working on). I'd not recommend two people working simultaneously on worksheets either.

I suspected that the two of us should not edit at the same time. Is there an easy way to signal to my collaborator not to edit because I am editing, and the other way around?

Sure. That's what the red "Someone is editing this notebook" warning is, right? I suppose you could always just put a message in the first cell saying "Don't edit this right now" or something too.
