What features should we add to this site?

asked 2010-08-19 02:18:20 +0100

As a companion to the "what's broken" question, what features should we add here?

As a start, it would be nice if there was some mechanism for auto-linking trac ticket numbers. Other auto-link ideas:

Auto-linking of links would be convenient. (That is, if I type "http://www.sagemath.org" then it should show up automatically as a link.) Also, is there a way of linking searches on this site to sage-support so results would show from both? That would reduce the number of duplicate questions.

I think William had already mentioned this, but adding support for jsMath / MathJax would be great.

edit (by evgeny): this page has instructions on enabling MathJax http://askbot.org/doc/mathjax.html, please take a look if you want to use math rendering on this site.

hopefully I'll get to this issue tomorrow. MathJax?

Yes, MathJax is the way of the future: http://www.mathjax.org/ (it's the successor to jsmath, written by the jsmath author)

Evgeny: Can we currently subscript or superscript anything? Just curious before the math markup gets added.

This feature can be enabled on this site - here is the manual: http://askbot.org/doc/mathjax.html

The markdown tips show up when composing a new question, but not when composing an answer--that would be useful. Along these lines, showing a list of all tags when composing a question could be inspirational when trying to think of good tags for the question.

I'm not sure if it's possible with Markdown, but it would be useful to have syntax highlighting for code blocks. Pygments appears to be the best choice for server-side highlighting in Python applications. Or would this be better to do here in the client?

http://alexgorbatchev.com/SyntaxHighlighter/manual/brushes/python.html or http://shjs.sourceforge.net/ Either would work IMHO.

This is really minor, but it would be convenient if the subscriptions email headers had a "from" entry to make email filtering a bit easier.

I totally agree!

Sorry for ignoring this. What email address can be used? Is there some official "from" email in the sagemath project?

Evgeny gravatar imageEvgeny ( 2010-11-29 15:46:28 +0100 )edit

I don't know of any official address; something like "Ask Sage <noreply@sagemath.org>" would probably suit our needs best; at least until someone else has a better idea

There is no "flag offensive" button for comments, only for answers and questions.

Also, there is no undelete function for comments, you have to remember what you typed previously.

It would be nice if the profile page informed me of my daily quotas (voting/___ thresholds): both the threshold, and the amount left for the day. :-) My votes for today are consumed (I saw via the red pop-up).

It would be nice if the vote-takeback-timeout/threshold could be increased. Sometimes I vote poorly, and want to revise my votes from a day before. Maybe a week would be a reasonable minimum threshold? Longer perhaps for those with higher Karma? Ex:Mike Hanson gives >> better Ans&Votes than me. =)

looks like it might be a configurable option in the settings, I've added it to the bugtracker.

A protocol for including a question and answer by the same person.

This site is a much better reference than the sage-support group. The questions are edited and refined and misguided answers move down the list (but remain there, just in case), and the search works (take that, google). So how about this becomes the place to share some tips with other users? But should we expose all the tip in the question or split it in two parts? And what should be done with the karma?

I think this would be nice too. As a similar example, the maple support site http://www.mapleprimes.com/ has both questions and "posts" for this purpose. Since it may be a while before posts are implemented here, I would suggest asking a question for which your tip is the answer, then adding the answer yourself.

niles gravatar imageniles ( 2011-01-02 05:05:47 +0100 )edit

Thanks, I will investigate how the mapleprimes site works.

On sage-support, Karl mentioned the similar website mapleprimes. One thing I like there is that they have "posts" in addition to "questions":

MaplePrimes Posts are for sharing your experiences, techniques and opinions about Maple, MapleSim and related products, as well as general interests in math and computing.

Of course one can write a question and then give the post as its answer, but that seems a little silly (unless it's not possible to set up posts, in which case I'd be in favor of a FAQ item recommending precisely this strategy :).

Would it be possible to include optionally the entire (unformatted) content of new questions, answers, and comments in the subscription emails? And possibly for updates, the before and after versions or a simple diff of the changes?

edit: this should be working now, edited in the post so that you could see whether the feature works for you or not.

the entire content is already there (I need to update asksage though), the diffs is an interesting idea will get it done too.

It would be nice if the "red envelope" messages didn't disappear completely after one view. Maybe they could be queued for auto-deletion (like voicemail), something configurable (say 7-14 days after first view.) Is it a performance or storage concern? Deletion or archival doesn't bother me either way, it just would be nice to see them for a few days (since sometimes it's hard to find the same message again if one thinks of another follow-up comment/Q/A).

I agree with that. It's not a performance concern, but an issue inherent to the design. The issue was recorded here: http://bugs.askbot.org/issues/26.

Evgeny gravatar imageEvgeny ( 2010-09-03 18:27:20 +0100 )edit

this feature works now. There is no auto-delete, you have to clear messages yourself at this point.
