Fixed now. For what it's worth, some of the following steps fixed the issue:

  • change the IP address of the Ask Sage server on the Google side after its recent move from Ohio State University to Laboratoire d'informatique de Paris Nord
  • update other things on the Google side (i do not manage the Google account so i cannot tell)
  • set up automatic https redirection on the Ask Sage server
  • extend the timeout of the Ask Sage server to give authentication checks enough time to complete

I got a report that Google sign-in to Ask Sage still fails from Safari, which I confirm.
