guest additions in virtual box

I have the .ova installed in VB and want to install the guest additions. I have logged into the root directory per instructions, the command line says 'root'. But I need to move into the virtual box directory so the command for installing the guest additions work. VB won't let me share folders until the guest additions are installed (catch 22), and nothing I do works.
