If you want to access a shell, you can type `Right-Ctrl` and `F1`, see [this page](http://wiki.sagemath.org/SageAppliance#Using_the_Sage_shell).

That default window is indeed confusing to newcomers.Fri, 24 Mar 2017 07:56:18 -0500http://ask.sagemath.org/question/29527/i-have-installed-a-virtual-vm-and-sage-on-my-windows-pc-how-do-i-start-an-interactive-sage-shell/?comment=37059#post-id-37059Comment by gainwmn for
If you installed the
sage-*.*.ova
image from the sagemath website, the Sage notebook should start automatically.

The window that does come up is quite different: it contains 'jupyter' sub-window with the run-down list of files "sage", "sage-7.4", "notebook-browser", and others with the options/buttons of 'upload', 'new' on the upper right side of the sub-window, with no command line anywhere. Pressing Right-Ctrl plus F1 does not bring anything, Any suggestions?Sat, 14 Jan 2017 17:51:14 -0600http://ask.sagemath.org/question/29527/i-have-installed-a-virtual-vm-and-sage-on-my-windows-pc-how-do-i-start-an-interactive-sage-shell/?comment=36292#post-id-36292Answer by robin for
I know I am supposed to type "Sage" somewhere, but where?

There are no docs anywhere, I guess the assumption is that it is "obvious" what to do next. It is not obvious to me.
Someone below says "The notebook should start automatically". It does not. And I have no idea how to start it. I use sage all the time on linux boxes and macosx, and it just works on those systems. Why is the virtual sage so difficult?Thu, 23 Mar 2017 19:29:55 -0500http://ask.sagemath.org/question/29527/i-have-installed-a-virtual-vm-and-sage-on-my-windows-pc-how-do-i-start-an-interactive-sage-shell/?answer=37056#post-id-37056Comment by kcrisman for
I have exactly the same problem. However, the default notebook interface on Windows has changed (soon the rest of Sage will follow suit) and perhaps that is part of the issue. There are docs - though the links have changed, see https://wiki.sagemath.org/SageAppliance/SageMath-7 though note "For SageMath 7.0 and higher, most steps should work but the final steps should be adapted to take into account the new default which is to use the Jupyter notebook."Fri, 24 Mar 2017 07:55:56 -0500http://ask.sagemath.org/question/29527/i-have-installed-a-virtual-vm-and-sage-on-my-windows-pc-how-do-i-start-an-interactive-sage-shell/?comment=37058#post-id-37058
