Reported upstream (to MathJax) as

• MathJax issue 2603: Fix some line breaks that make math read wrong

A workaround might be to disable line wrapping.

This is what SageCell and CoCalc do, apparently.

Not sure how one can disable MathJax line wrapping:

• in a given Jupyter sheet
• in a given Jupyter installation
• for a given Jupyter kernel
• ...
