Trying to get started in replacing Mathematica with SAGE in a classroom setting where every student has a PC. What's the simplest way to get each student PC to acess SAGE ? Do I have to install SAGE on each PC ? Can I just get our IT people to install SAGE on our local server and then the students could just login to the server (is this naive ?) ? Or can we not download at all and use SAGE through the internet from an outside host server ?

How did other instructors get started ?

Hi! This is a great question, but perhaps not as suited to this venue - people will have long answers and there is no "right" answer. Do you mind starting a thread at http://groups.google.com/group/sage-edu about this? There are lots of people with experience.

That said, the most efficient solution many of us use is the local Sage server. But it really does depend on your needs and individual pedagogy.

Various working strategies (to be combined) are listed on the wiki page How to spread sage during a workshop.

If PCs have Linux installed with all the same version, you can install Sage on them by repeating a single procedure. Otherwise (if students have their own laptop, mostly running windows), the solution using self-replicating live USB key works quite well.

As explained, unless you have a huge server set up for that purpose or few students, the local server solution won't work alone, but it helps to get rid of a few remaining recalcitrant PCs.
