I installed the VMware player v4.0.0 on Windows XP SP3 and imported sage-4.7.2.ova. I don't see any obvious error messages, so I assume everything is ok. When I try to open the URL http://localhost:8000 in IE v8, I get the error message "Page cannot be opened". If I replace localhost by 127.0.0.1 or 192.168.1.2 (the IP address of the host machine) nothing changes. The command ping 127.0.0.1 at the command prompt is answered as it should, but ping 127.0.0.1:8000 gets no answer showing obviously that nobody is out there to answer the call on port 8000.

I browsed through the contributions on this community board and I understand that the reason for my problem is that the host machine (i.e. my IE browser) and the VMware virtual machine cannot communicate without setting up the correct NAT configuration (as I said this is what I understand and may be completely wrong). I found a contribution listing VMware commands to set up this NAT configuration, but I do not see any way to apply those commands to my VMware player installation. BTW: the VMware player offers a NAT setting in the configuration dialog and this setting is activated, so I'd assume that NAT is already activated and I'd not need any additional NAT configuration.

Can somebody point me to a solution for my problem?

I know this may not help at all, but would using VirtualBox make a difference? That seems to be the "preferred" solution currently.

Hello, Try to use "Bridged" settings of the network adapter. Then you need to connect to the IP of the VM guest (not the host IP). The command in linux is ifconfig (not ipconfig).

The VM's are build and tested with Virtual Box, so as kcrisman pointed out in his comment this might be the best solution. If you found documentation which suggests to use VMware player than maybe report the link, I think all old documentation should be changed for consistency.

Yes, when I had trouble installing this several months ago and wasted a bunch of my time because I tried to use VMWare, I suggested that the documentation be changed to not say anything about VMWare. http://ask.sagemath.org/question/621/virtual-what-when-using-sage-47-for-windows And, the "documentation" for VMWare still exists in many places, such as: http://boxen.math.washington.edu/sage/win/README-vmware.txt i.e., no one bothered to delete a few files, which honestly is only going to take like 5 minutes and will save many users a great deal of time. Especially seeing as how a version or two ago, ONLY VMWare was supported, there will be a lot of Windows users upgrading who will assume that it should still work. I created a trac ticket that documentation for the VM's needs to be fixed http://trac.sagemath.org/sage_trac/ticket/12042

I also emailed to our webmaster H. Schilly that he should remove all Readme.txt files except the Readme-virtualbox.txt as a first fix. I think the Sage Project could need help from people actually using the virtual machines. You see - most developers don't use them so it is a bit off the radar. And well, it's no commercial project, so people will work on what they like. Maybe you can help with the update of those readme files?
