I've discovered an odd fix, though I don't know how broadly applicable it is: before switching on the axes, use one of the preset views under right-click->View->[Positive Octant, XY Plane, etc -- any of them should work]. After the graph re-orients, toggle the axes (right-click->Style->Axes). At least in the handful of examples I've tried, it seems to correct the problem....

after further testing, it turns out not all of the preset views have the desired effect.

[EDIT: After further testing, I've decided this solution may not be worth the trouble. Sometimes the XY-Plane setting doesn't fixes it, but YZ-Plane does. Clearly there are other variables at work....]
